When Tyson joined Avolve Software nearly 15 years ago, he couldn't have predicted the impact that decision would have on his career, or indeed his personal and professional growth. With a background in corporate consulting and a stint at a tech startup, Tyson's path to Avolve was paved by meaningful connections and a desire for impactful work.
"I've spent pretty much half of my professional life at Avolve," Tyson shared. "Little did I know all those years ago that it would become such a significant part of my career."
Tyson joined the company when a former colleague of his became an executive at Avolve and encouraged Tyson to come onboard. “From a professional growth perspective, I felt like Avolve was a better fit for me, being a small company where I could have a real impact,” he said. "I came originally as a senior systems engineer,” Tyson said, noting that he worked with some of the same people back then who are still at the company today.
This role allowed Tyson to work closely with customers from start to finish, handling everything from implementation and technical work to training and post-sale support.
As Avolve grew, so did Tyson's responsibilities. He transitioned into management roles, overseeing professional services and later focusing on business analysts. However, it was a conversation about seven years ago that led to a pivotal moment in Tyson's career at Avolve.
"I was pulled aside and told, 'This is a position that, based upon your skill set and your history, I think you uniquely fill. Would you be willing to take this position here at Avolve?'" Tyson said. The role was that of a corporate architect, a position that would allow him to work across all departments and become, as he puts it, "the Swiss Army knife of Avolve."
“Taking that role gave me an opportunity to work with pretty much everyone at the company, from finance to infrastructure, our development teams, our support team, to the project management team,” he said. For Tyson, the role also meant expanding his influence and expertise across the entire organization.
Most recently, Tyson has taken on a new challenge as the director of the sales engineering group. "My time now is spent working strategically with our revenue group, working closely with each of the account executives, formulating strategy, going on site and working with customers, and managing our group that does the demos," he explained.
When asked about what keeps him engaged and excited to come to work each morning, Tyson's answer was clear: the impact of their work and the people he works with. "Avolve for me has always been more like a family than going to work," he said. "That's one of the big reasons why I'm still here 15 years later."
He finds particular fulfillment in the gov tech sector and the tangible impact the work Avolve does has on communities. "I literally go to work every day and have an impact, by making improvements to constituents' experiences," he said. "If we can do something that makes that process a heck of a lot easier for the applicant and for those in the public service, then I want to be a part of that."
Reflecting on his 15 years at Avolve, Tyson emphasizes the importance of the relationships he's built -- both with colleagues and customers. "If you ask the root reasons why I've spent more than half of my professional life here, it's all about people," he said.
